Purpose Statement

Having strong social connections is one of the most significant aspects of health and well-being, and it is also critical to maintaining a long and happy life. We are social animals, and we need to be connected to feel loved and cared for. When we are connected to our communities and to other people, we are healthier and feel more valued. Social connectedness provides us with purpose and significance in life, and it is a pillar of longevity.

Friendship and social connections

Friendship and social connections nurture cognitive processing and mental health in addition to lowering all-cause mortality. Perhaps not surprisingly, a key element of a long healthy life is maintaining a strong dedication to friends and family and nurturing a support network. Okinawa, one of the world’s few Blue Zones, enjoys the world’s highest life expectancy and is home to a large number of healthy centenarians. The Okinawans have a sophisticated social network known as a “moai,” which acts as a financial and emotional safety net for people throughout life. Their network enables them to offer support to each other in times of need. It gives them the emotionally soothing security of knowing they have someone to rely on no matter what. And as such, these individuals are some of the happiest, healthiest, and longest-lived on Earth.

Currently, there are millions of people who endure loneliness, depression, and anxiety, and the numbers are only rising. In a world where millions struggle to find their place, to be accepted and understood, and to feel connected, there is an increasing need for meaningful connections that bring us together. As human beings, we all yearn for connection, and we seek to satisfy this need through meaningful connections with one another. When this is neglected, insufficient or breaks down we are more subject to mental health issues.

Herein, lies the value of joining a community and working towards developing a network of like-minded individuals with whom you can share your experiences, triumphs, and tribulations with. When we take time to nourish relationships and establish a sense of belonging and connection our perception of the world is drastically improved, and we are much more likely to seek out experiences that continue to strengthen bonds with others. This in turn leads to better health outcomes and creates a positive feedback loop from which additionally positive behaviours emerge.
